perfusion-weighted imaging

MRI technique that measures cerebral blood flow and blood volume to assess tissue perfusion and vascular function.

Full Definition

Perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) is an MRI technique that evaluates cerebral blood flow, blood volume, and perfusion parameters by tracking the passage of contrast agents or using arterial spin labeling methods. PWI provides information about tissue viability, vascular function, and hemodynamic status, making it valuable for stroke assessment, tumor evaluation, and neurovascular research. The technique can distinguish between reversibly and irreversibly damaged tissue in acute conditions.

Usage

Usage note: Hyphenate consistently; often abbreviated as PWI in subsequent references within documents.

In Context
