reverse inference

Inferring cognitive processes from observed brain activation patterns.

Reverse inference is a form of reasoning that attempts to infer the presence of specific cognitive processes or mental states from observed patterns of brain activation. Unlike forward inference, which predicts brain activation from cognitive manipulations, reverse inference works backwards from activation patterns to cognitive interpretations. This approach requires careful consideration of the selectivity and specificity of brain regions for particular cognitive functions. Reverse inference is facilitated by large-scale meta-analytic databases like NeuroSynth and BrainMap, which provide probabilistic maps of brain-behavior relationships across many studies.

Usage note: Distinguish carefully from 'forward inference' as they represent opposite directions of reasoning.
