streamline

A reconstructed pathway in tractography representing the probable course of white matter fiber bundles.

Full Definition

A streamline is a continuous three-dimensional curve generated by tractography algorithms that represents the probable path of white matter fibers based on diffusion tensor data. Streamlines are constructed by following the principal diffusion direction from voxel to voxel, starting from seed regions and continuing until termination criteria are met. Collections of streamlines form tract reconstructions that can be visualized, quantified, and analyzed to study white matter anatomy and pathology. The accuracy and biological validity of streamlines depend on acquisition parameters, processing methods, and algorithm choices.
