Contact configuration refers to the programmed arrangement of electrode contacts, including which contacts serve as anodes (positive), cathodes (negative), or remain inactive during neurostimulation. The configuration determines the shape, direction, and intensity of the electric field generated around the electrode. Options include monopolar (single active contact with distant return), bipolar (adjacent contacts of opposite polarity), and complex multipolar arrangements. Different configurations can target specific neural structures while avoiding others, making contact selection crucial for optimizing therapeutic benefits and minimizing side effects.
