Anatomical region between the spinal canal and dura mater where neuromodulation leads are commonly placed.

Full Definition

The epidural space is a potential space located between the vertebral canal and the dura mater, the outermost membrane covering the spinal cord. This space contains fat, small blood vessels, and nerve roots as they exit the spinal canal. In neuromodulation procedures, particularly spinal cord stimulation, electrodes are placed in the epidural space to deliver electrical stimulation close to the spinal cord without penetrating the dura. The space varies in size along the spinal column and provides an ideal location for lead placement due to its proximity to neural targets while maintaining relative safety compared to intrathecal approaches.
