Explantation refers to the surgical procedure for removing implanted neurostimulation devices and their associated components, including pulse generators, leads, extensions, and anchors. Indications for explantation include device infection that cannot be cleared with antibiotics, device malfunction beyond repair, patient intolerance, loss of therapeutic efficacy, or patient preference for discontinuation. The procedure requires careful surgical planning to minimize tissue damage and ensure complete component removal. Incomplete explantation can leave behind foreign material that may cause complications or interfere with future imaging studies. Explantation procedures may be partial (removing only certain components) or complete (removing the entire system), and may be followed by immediate reimplantation or staged procedures.
