Intrathecal drug delivery (ITDD) is a neuromodulation technique that administers medications directly into the cerebrospinal fluid through implanted pump systems and intrathecal catheters. This approach bypasses the blood-brain barrier and allows for targeted drug delivery to spinal cord and brain receptors at much lower systemic doses than oral or intravenous administration. Common medications include opioids, local anesthetics, baclofen for spasticity, and ziconotide for severe pain. The system consists of a programmable pump implanted in the abdomen connected to a catheter positioned in the intrathecal space. This targeted delivery method can provide superior therapeutic effects while minimizing systemic side effects.
