Full Definition

Local Field Potentials (LFPs) are low-frequency electrical signals (typically 1-100 Hz) that reflect the synchronized synaptic activity of neuronal populations around the recording electrode. In neuromodulation, LFPs serve as important biomarkers for disease states and treatment responses, particularly in closed-loop systems. These signals can indicate pathological brain activity patterns, such as excessive beta oscillations in Parkinson's disease or gamma activity in epilepsy, enabling adaptive stimulation algorithms to adjust therapy parameters in real-time based on ongoing neural activity.
