The microlesion effect refers to the immediate but temporary improvement in symptoms that often occurs following electrode implantation for deep brain stimulation or other neuromodulation procedures, even before stimulation is activated. This effect is thought to result from minimal tissue disruption, microhemorrhage, or inflammatory responses along the electrode trajectory that temporarily alter local neural activity. The microlesion effect typically lasts days to weeks and can confound early assessments of stimulation efficacy. Understanding this phenomenon is important for proper timing of device programming and realistic patient expectations about therapy onset and maintenance.
