Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) is a non-destructive neuromodulation technique that applies radiofrequency energy in short bursts, typically 20 milliseconds on and 480 milliseconds off. Unlike continuous radiofrequency ablation, PRF maintains tissue temperature below 42°C, avoiding thermal damage while still achieving therapeutic effects. The mechanism involves electromagnetic field effects on neural membranes rather than thermal coagulation. PRF is particularly useful for treating conditions where neural preservation is desired while still achieving pain relief, such as trigeminal neuralgia or chronic radicular pain.
