Pulse Width

The duration of each electrical pulse in microseconds, a key programmable parameter in neurostimulation devices.

Full Definition

Pulse width refers to the temporal duration of individual electrical stimulation pulses, typically measured in microseconds (μs). Along with amplitude and frequency, pulse width is one of the three fundamental parameters that define the characteristics of electrical stimulation in neuromodulation devices. Shorter pulse widths (50-200 μs) tend to activate larger nerve fibers preferentially, while longer pulse widths (300-1000 μs) may recruit smaller fibers and can be more energy-efficient. Clinicians adjust pulse width to optimize therapeutic effects while minimizing side effects and battery consumption in implantable devices.
