Stun Effect

Temporary worsening of symptoms immediately following neurostimulation device implantation, typically resolving as tissue healing progresses.

Full Definition

Stun effect describes the transient exacerbation of neurological symptoms that may occur in the immediate post-operative period following neuromodulation device implantation. This phenomenon is thought to result from surgical trauma, tissue edema, or temporary disruption of normal neural function around the implantation site. Unlike the beneficial microlesion effect, stun effect represents a temporary deterioration that typically resolves over days to weeks as inflammation subsides and tissue healing progresses. Recognition of stun effect is important for patient counseling and avoiding premature device adjustments during the acute post-operative period.
