Fascicular biopsy is a specialized surgical technique for obtaining nerve tissue samples while minimizing functional impairment. Unlike conventional nerve biopsies that remove entire nerve segments, this procedure involves careful microsurgical dissection to remove only selected fascicles from within a nerve trunk. The technique is typically performed on sensory nerves such as the superficial peroneal nerve or sural nerve to reduce motor dysfunction risk. Fascicular biopsy provides valuable histological information for diagnosing inflammatory neuropathies, vasculitis, amyloidosis, and other conditions requiring tissue confirmation while preserving most nerve fibers and their associated functions.
