Full Definition
Insertional activity refers to the electrical potentials generated when a needle electrode is inserted into or moved within muscle tissue, representing the mechanical activation of muscle fibers. Normal insertional activity lasts briefly (less than 300 milliseconds) and consists of positive and negative spike potentials. Increased insertional activity with prolonged afterdischarges suggests membrane irritability and is seen in denervated or myopathic muscle. Reduced insertional activity may indicate muscle fiber loss or replacement by fibrotic tissue.
