Satellite Cell

Quiescent muscle stem cells that activate during muscle injury to facilitate repair and regeneration, important in understanding muscle pathology.

Full Definition

Satellite cells are a population of quiescent stem cells located between the muscle fiber sarcolemma and basement membrane. Under normal conditions, these cells remain dormant, but they activate in response to muscle injury, exercise, or pathological conditions. Once activated, satellite cells proliferate and differentiate into myoblasts, which can either fuse with existing muscle fibers for repair or form new muscle fibers. Dysfunction of satellite cells contributes to the pathogenesis of various muscular dystrophies and age-related muscle wasting. Understanding satellite cell biology is crucial for interpreting muscle biopsy findings and developing therapeutic strategies for neuromuscular disorders.
