Single-fiber electromyography (SFEMG) is a highly specialized electrophysiological technique that records action potentials from individual muscle fibers using a needle electrode with a small recording surface. The primary application is assessment of neuromuscular junction function through measurement of jitter and blocking phenomena. SFEMG is considered the gold standard for diagnosing neuromuscular junction disorders, with sensitivity approaching 95% for myasthenia gravis. The technique requires specialized equipment, extensive operator training, and patient cooperation to maintain consistent voluntary muscle contraction. Results provide quantitative measures of neuromuscular transmission stability and can detect abnormalities before they become clinically apparent.
