The Tensilon test, also known as the edrophonium test, is a clinical diagnostic procedure historically used to diagnose myasthenia gravis through temporary pharmacological improvement of muscle weakness. The test involves intravenous injection of edrophonium chloride (Tensilon), a short-acting anticholinesterase that briefly increases acetylcholine availability at the neuromuscular junction. A positive test shows rapid but temporary improvement in muscle strength, particularly in extraocular muscles, within 1-2 minutes of injection. However, the test has largely fallen out of favor due to safety concerns including cardiac arrhythmias, bronchospasm, and the availability of more reliable serological and electrophysiological testing methods.
