Bielschowsky stain is a classic silver impregnation method developed for demonstrating neuronal structures, particularly neurofibrils, axons, dendrites, and pathological protein aggregates. This technique is especially valuable for visualizing neuritic plaques in Alzheimer's disease, neurofibrillary tangles, and dystrophic neurites. The silver deposits appear black against a light background, providing excellent contrast for detailed examination of neuronal architecture. While largely superseded by immunohistochemistry for specific protein detection, Bielschowsky staining remains useful for overall assessment of neuritic pathology and for cases where specific antibodies may not be available.
