Full Definition

Binucleated neurons are nerve cells that contain two distinct nuclei within a single cell body, representing an abnormal cellular morphology that can occur in various pathological conditions. These neurons may result from incomplete cell division, nuclear fragmentation and reformation, or cellular stress responses. Binucleated neurons are more commonly observed in aging brains, certain neurodegenerative diseases, and following various types of neuronal injury. While occasional binucleated neurons can be found in normal brain tissue, their increased frequency may indicate underlying pathological processes. The presence of binucleated neurons should be distinguished from nuclear fragmentation artifacts and normal variation in nuclear morphology.
