central neurocytoma

A benign intraventricular tumor composed of uniform small round cells with neuronal differentiation.

Full Definition

Central neurocytoma is a rare benign WHO grade II intraventricular tumor that typically arises from the septum pellucidum or lateral ventricular wall. The tumor is composed of uniform small round cells with neuronal differentiation, characterized by round to oval nuclei with speckled chromatin and minimal cytoplasm. Central neurocytomas show a characteristic honeycomb or oligodendroglioma-like pattern and may contain rosettes. Immunohistochemically, they are positive for neuronal markers such as synaptophysin and NeuN. These tumors predominantly affect young adults and have an excellent prognosis following complete surgical resection. Electron microscopy reveals neurosecretory granules and synaptic structures.
