Granulovacuolar degeneration refers to a distinctive pathological change affecting pyramidal neurons, particularly in the hippocampal CA1 region, characterized by the presence of cytoplasmic vacuoles each containing a single, central, basophilic granule. This change increases with age but is significantly more prevalent in Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. The vacuoles are thought to represent autophagic structures, and the granules contain various proteins including tau and ubiquitin. Granulovacuolar degeneration is considered an important marker of neuronal stress and dysfunction in the hippocampus.
