Iron-containing phagocytic cells that indicate previous hemorrhage or chronic bleeding in brain tissue.

Full Definition

Hemosiderin-laden macrophages are phagocytic cells containing iron deposits derived from the breakdown of hemoglobin following hemorrhage. In brain tissue, these cells serve as markers of previous bleeding episodes and can persist for months to years after the initial hemorrhagic event. They appear as golden-brown pigmented cells on routine staining and can be highlighted with iron stains such as Perl's Prussian blue. Their presence helps pathologists date hemorrhagic events and identify areas of chronic microbleeding.
