Eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusions containing actin filaments, associated with aging and Alzheimer's disease.

Full Definition

Hirano bodies are distinctive eosinophilic, rod-shaped cytoplasmic inclusions found predominantly in pyramidal neurons of the hippocampus. These structures contain paracrystalline arrays of actin filaments along with other cytoskeletal proteins and are named after the researcher who first described them in detail. While occasionally seen in normal aging, Hirano bodies are significantly increased in Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. They appear as bright pink, elongated structures on H&E staining and can be highlighted with special stains for actin. Their presence is considered a marker of neuronal cytoskeletal disruption.
