Neuronal loss refers to the death and disappearance of neurons from brain tissue, resulting in reduced cell density in affected regions. This process is a hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases and can occur through various mechanisms including apoptosis, necrosis, or autophagy. Neuronal loss is typically accompanied by reactive gliosis and can be quantified through stereological methods or assessed qualitatively. The pattern and severity of neuronal loss often correlate with clinical symptoms and disease progression in conditions such as Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, and motor neuron disease.
