neuronophagia

Process of neuronal destruction and removal by activated microglia and macrophages.

Full Definition

Neuronophagia describes the active process by which damaged or dying neurons are engulfed and removed by activated microglial cells or infiltrating macrophages. This phenomenon is commonly observed in acute neuronal injury such as viral encephalitis, ischemic damage, or toxic insults. Microscopically, neuronophagia appears as clusters of microglial cells surrounding and infiltrating neuronal cell bodies, often with loss of normal neuronal morphology. This process represents an important mechanism of tissue cleanup and remodeling following neuronal injury and serves as a marker of acute or ongoing neuronal damage in neuropathological examination.
