A glial cell positioned closely adjacent to a neuron, often indicating neuronal injury or stress.

Full Definition

Perineuronal satellites are glial cells, typically oligodendrocytes or microglia, that cluster around damaged or stressed neurons. This phenomenon is commonly observed in various pathological conditions and represents a cellular response to neuronal dysfunction. The presence of multiple satellite cells around a neuron can indicate acute injury, chronic degeneration, or metabolic stress. This finding is particularly significant in neurodegenerative diseases and acute brain injuries.

Usage note: Distinguish from 'satellitosis' which refers to the process, not the individual cells.
