Perineuronal satellite cells are glial elements that cluster around neuronal cell bodies, particularly in response to various forms of neuronal stress, hypoxia, or metabolic disturbance. These cells, primarily oligodendrocytes and astrocytes, form tight associations with neurons and may represent attempts at neuronal support or repair. Their increased number or prominence can indicate sublethal neuronal injury and is commonly observed in conditions such as hepatic encephalopathy or chronic hypoxia.
