Rosenthal fibers are distinctive, elongated, eosinophilic inclusions found within astrocytic cytoplasm, composed of intermediate filaments and stress proteins including GFAP and αB-crystallin. Named after Werner Rosenthal, these structures are pathognomonic of certain conditions, particularly pilocytic astrocytomas and Alexander disease. They represent a form of astrocytic stress response and protein aggregation. Their identification is crucial for tumor classification and genetic disease diagnosis in neuropathology.
