Distinctive striped appearance of neurons caused by prominent Nissl substance, often accentuated in certain pathological states.

Full Definition

The tigroid pattern refers to the characteristic striped or tiger-like appearance of neuronal cytoplasm created by alternating bands of basophilic Nissl substance and lighter cytoplasm. This pattern is most prominently seen in large motor neurons under normal conditions but can become accentuated or altered in various disease states. In some pathological conditions, the tigroid pattern may be enhanced due to increased protein synthesis demands, while in others it may be lost due to chromatolysis or cellular injury. The tigroid pattern is best appreciated in cresyl violet or other Nissl stains and serves as an indicator of neuronal metabolic activity and health.
