Full Definition

Torpedoes in neuropathology refer to distinctive fusiform or torpedo-shaped swellings that develop in the axons of cerebellar Purkinje cells as a result of various pathological processes. These structures represent sites of impaired axonal transport and accumulation of organelles, neurofilaments, and other cellular components. Torpedoes can be seen in normal aging but are significantly increased in cerebellar degenerative diseases, chronic alcohol abuse, and other conditions affecting Purkinje cell function. They appear as eosinophilic, elongated swellings along Purkinje cell axons and are best visualized in the granular layer of the cerebellum using routine histological stains or neurofilament immunostaining.
