sundown syndrome

Worsening of behavioral and cognitive symptoms in the late afternoon or evening hours.

Full Definition

Sundown syndrome, also called sundowning, refers to the deterioration of behavior, mood, and cognition that occurs predictably during late afternoon and evening hours in patients with dementia or other neurocognitive disorders. Symptoms may include increased confusion, agitation, wandering, anxiety, and hallucinations. The phenomenon is thought to result from disrupted circadian rhythms, accumulated fatigue, reduced environmental stimuli, or neurochemical changes. Recognition of sundown syndrome patterns helps caregivers and medical teams optimize care timing and environmental interventions.
