A brain region in the frontal lobe responsible for speech production and motor aspects of language.

Full Definition

Broca's area, also known as Brodmann areas 44 and 45, is located in the posterior part of the frontal lobe, typically in the left hemisphere for right-handed individuals. This brain region is crucial for speech production, language processing, and the motor planning required for articulation. Damage to Broca's area results in Broca's aphasia, characterized by difficulty in speech production while comprehension remains relatively intact. The area is named after French physician Paul Broca, who first identified its role in language function in the 1860s. Modern neuroimaging has revealed that Broca's area is part of a larger language network and is also involved in syntax processing and working memory.
