ganglioglioma

A low-grade mixed neuronal-glial tumor typically presenting with seizures and commonly found in the temporal lobe.

Full Definition

Ganglioglioma is a WHO grade I mixed tumor composed of both neuronal and glial components, most commonly occurring in children and young adults. These tumors frequently present with seizures and are often located in the temporal lobe, though they can occur throughout the central nervous system. The neuronal component consists of dysplastic ganglion cells, while the glial component is typically astrocytic. Imaging often shows a cystic lesion with a mural nodule, and complete surgical resection is usually curative. The tumor is strongly associated with chronic epilepsy and may show calcifications on imaging studies.

Usage

Usage note: Often associated with epilepsy presentations in pediatric and young adult patients.
