T1 hypointensity

Areas on T1-weighted MRI sequences that appear darker than surrounding brain tissue, often indicating tissue destruction or necrosis.

Full Definition

A radiological finding on T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging where specific brain regions appear darker (hypointense) compared to normal brain parenchyma. In neurosurgical oncology, T1 hypointensity often represents areas of tissue necrosis, cystic degeneration, or edema within or around brain tumors. This finding is particularly significant in high-grade gliomas where central necrosis is a hallmark feature. The presence and extent of T1 hypointensity can influence surgical planning, prognosis, and treatment decisions. It is often contrasted with areas of T1 hyperintensity which may indicate hemorrhage or protein-rich fluid.

Usage note: Editors must distinguish between T1 and T2 weighted sequences as the signal characteristics have opposite interpretations.
