salt-wasting crisis

Life-threatening emergency in CAH where infants lose sodium and become dehydrated and hypotensive.

Full Definition

A salt-wasting crisis is a potentially fatal complication of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) characterized by severe sodium loss, dehydration, hyperkalemia, and circulatory collapse. This emergency typically occurs in the first few weeks of life when aldosterone deficiency prevents normal sodium retention. Early detection through newborn screening is critical because salt-wasting crises can develop rapidly and may be fatal if not promptly treated with IV fluids, electrolyte replacement, and corticosteroid therapy.
