The Mallampati score is a widely used airway assessment tool that evaluates the visibility of oropharyngeal structures to predict potential difficulty with laryngoscopy and intubation. The classification ranges from Class I (full visibility of soft palate, uvula, and tonsillar pillars) to Class IV (only hard palate visible). In obstetric anesthesia, this assessment is particularly crucial because pregnancy-related anatomical changes including airway edema, weight gain, and breast enlargement can increase the risk of difficult intubation. A higher Mallampati score suggests increased difficulty with airway management, influencing the choice between regional and general anesthesia techniques.

Usage note: Distinguish from Cormack-Lehane grading which assesses laryngeal view during laryngoscopy; Mallampati is performed with patient awake.
