Programmed Intermittent Epidural Bolus (PIEB) is an advanced epidural delivery technique that automatically administers predetermined volumes of local anesthetic solution at preset time intervals, typically every 40-60 minutes. This method provides more consistent analgesia compared to continuous infusions by creating better medication distribution throughout the epidural space due to the bolus pressure effect. PIEB can be used alone or combined with patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) for optimal pain management during labor. Research suggests PIEB may result in reduced motor block, decreased total local anesthetic consumption, improved patient satisfaction, and lower rates of breakthrough pain requiring manual interventions compared to traditional continuous epidural infusion techniques.
