Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a minor surgical procedure where the cervix is dilated and the endometrial lining is scraped or suctioned from the uterus using a curette. This procedure may be performed for diagnostic purposes (to investigate abnormal bleeding or obtain tissue samples) or therapeutic reasons (to remove retained products of conception, treat heavy bleeding, or perform abortion). The procedure is typically done under general anaesthesia as a day case. Complications are rare but can include uterine perforation, infection, or Asherman's syndrome with repeated procedures.
