The distance from the pubic bone to the top of the uterus, measured to assess fetal growth.
Full Definition
The measurement in centimeters from the top of the pubic symphysis to the fundus (top) of the uterus, used as a screening tool to assess fetal growth and gestational age. After 20 weeks of pregnancy, fundal height in centimeters typically corresponds roughly to gestational age in weeks. Measurements significantly above or below expected values may indicate conditions such as macrosomia, intrauterine growth restriction, oligohydramnios, or polyhydramnios. The measurement is performed with the patient supine using a tape measure.
