involution

The process by which the uterus returns to its pre-pregnancy size and condition following delivery.

Full Definition

Uterine involution is the physiological process through which the uterus contracts and returns to its approximate pre-pregnancy size and weight over the six weeks following childbirth. This process involves continued uterine contractions that compress blood vessels, reduce bleeding, and gradually decrease the organ's size from approximately 1000 grams at delivery to 50-100 grams by six weeks postpartum. The fundal height decreases by approximately 1-2 centimeters per day, and the process is typically complete by 6-8 weeks postpartum. Breastfeeding accelerates involution due to oxytocin release.
