macrosomia

Pronunciation: mak-roh-SOH-mee-uh

Fetal overgrowth typically defined as birth weight greater than 4000 or 4500 grams.

Full Definition

Macrosomia refers to excessive fetal growth resulting in a birth weight significantly above normal parameters, most commonly defined as greater than 4000 grams (8 pounds 13 ounces) or 4500 grams depending on the institutional definition. The condition is associated with maternal diabetes, previous history of macrosomic infants, prolonged pregnancy, and maternal obesity. Macrosomia increases the risk of birth complications including shoulder dystocia, birth trauma, cesarean delivery, and postpartum hemorrhage. It also predisposes the infant to metabolic complications such as hypoglycemia and respiratory distress.

Usage

Usage note: Weight thresholds may vary by institution; specify cutoff value when documenting.
