Full Definition
Nuchal translucency (NT) measurement is performed between 11+0 to 13+6 weeks gestation as part of first-trimester screening for chromosomal abnormalities, particularly Down syndrome. The measurement quantifies the sonolucent space between the skin and soft tissue overlying the cervical spine. Increased NT thickness is associated with higher risk of chromosomal abnormalities and cardiac defects, and forms part of the combined screening test along with maternal age and biochemical markers.
