polyhydramnios

Excessive accumulation of amniotic fluid during pregnancy, opposite of oligohydramnios.

Full Definition

Polyhydramnios, also called hydramnios, is a condition characterised by an abnormally large amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the foetus. Diagnosed when the amniotic fluid index exceeds 24cm or the deepest vertical pocket measures over 8cm, it can be associated with foetal anomalies, maternal diabetes, or multiple pregnancies. The condition may lead to preterm labor, cord prolapse, or placental abruption.
