Full Definition

The biomechanical approach in occupational therapy is based on mechanical and kinesiological principles of human movement. This frame of reference assumes that occupational performance problems result from decreased range of motion, strength, or endurance. Treatment focuses on restoring these physical components through therapeutic exercise, positioning, and use of adaptive equipment. The approach is commonly used with orthopedic conditions, burns, and other physical disabilities. Interventions may include progressive resistive exercises, joint mobilization, and work hardening programs to restore functional capacity.
