Full Definition

Sensory modulation refers to the central nervous system's capacity to regulate neural messages about sensory stimuli in a controlled and organized manner. This process involves facilitating or inhibiting sensory information to produce responses that are proportionate to the sensory input and appropriate for the functional demands of the situation. Difficulties with sensory modulation can manifest as over-responsivity, under-responsivity, or sensory seeking behaviors. Occupational therapists assess and address sensory modulation challenges to improve clients' participation in daily activities and social situations.

Usage note: Distinguish from 'sensory integration' which refers to the neurological process of organizing sensory information.
