Sensory processing refers to the way the nervous system receives sensory information and turns it into appropriate motor and behavioral responses. This complex neurological process involves detecting, modulating, interpreting, and responding to sensory stimuli from multiple sensory systems including tactile, vestibular, proprioceptive, visual, and auditory systems. Difficulties with sensory processing can significantly impact occupational performance and daily functioning. Occupational therapists assess and address sensory processing challenges through various intervention approaches including environmental modifications and sensory-based interventions.
