In ocular oncology, exophytic growth refers to a tumor growth pattern where the mass extends outward from the retinal surface into the vitreous cavity, as opposed to endophytic growth which extends inward toward the choroid. This pattern is commonly seen in retinoblastoma and affects treatment planning. Exophytic tumors may cause vitreous seeding and can be associated with retinal detachment. The growth pattern influences surgical approach and prognosis.
