Peripapillary atrophy refers to the gradual loss of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and underlying choriocapillaris in the region surrounding the optic nerve head. In ocular oncology, this finding can indicate tumor-related vascular compromise or direct tumor extension. The atrophy may be categorized as alpha-zone (irregular RPE depigmentation) or beta-zone (complete absence of RPE with visible choroidal vessels). Recognition of peripapillary atrophy patterns helps distinguish between benign and malignant processes, particularly when evaluating posterior uveal lesions.
