Photocoagulation is a therapeutic technique that uses focused laser energy to create controlled thermal damage to ocular tissues, commonly employed in the treatment of small retinal and choroidal tumors. In ocular oncology, photocoagulation is particularly useful for treating small choroidal melanomas, retinal capillary hemangiomas, and circumscribed choroidal hemangiomas. The procedure typically utilizes argon, krypton, or diode lasers to generate heat that causes protein coagulation and tissue necrosis within the target lesion. Treatment parameters including laser wavelength, power, duration, and spot size must be carefully selected based on tumor characteristics and location. While photocoagulation can achieve local tumor control for appropriately selected lesions, close follow-up is required to monitor treatment response and detect potential recurrence.
