Tumor-associated macrophages are immune cells that infiltrate ocular malignancies and play complex roles in tumor biology. These macrophages can exhibit different phenotypes: M1 macrophages generally have anti-tumor properties, while M2 macrophages often promote tumor growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis. In uveal melanoma, the density and phenotype of tumor-associated macrophages have prognostic significance and may influence treatment response. Research is ongoing into targeting these cells as a therapeutic strategy. The presence and characteristics of these macrophages can be assessed through immunohistochemistry and may provide additional prognostic information beyond traditional histologic features.

Usage note: Distinguish M1 (anti-tumor) from M2 (pro-tumor) phenotypes when applicable.
